Playing at Mass
This wonderful picture (hat tip to Catholic Church Conservation) reminded me of my own childhood, when (like many other future priests) I played at saying Mass. I didn't have such elaborate 'play vestments,' but I had a fairly decent altar (my bedroom desk), pretend tabernacle (a toy policeman's helmet) and pulpit (a chair). Did any other readers play at celebrating the Sacred Liturgy?

Well, Pope Benedict and his brother did, as he told in an interview with Bayerischer Rundfunk some years ago. Their mother made little vestments for them and they wrote their sermons in booklets.

Yes... and made my own vestments too and on another occasion set off a fire alarm with the incense from the thurible!
How wonderful to see this! Yes, I played at being a priest - my mother would pin together two small towels for my chasuble and I would on occasion trace "plays" with my younger siblings, agreeing to play at something they liked if they would be my "congregation".
I've got to say I'm impressed by the vestments in the photo. Someone went to a lot of trouble! They're beautiful.
When I was growing up I said 'mass' for my family. I was a bit of a liberal so there were no vestments.
I used a piece of lego for the tabernacle key (despite lack of a tabernacle!).
I think I remember we had two or three communions during the one mass!
My mum used to play pretend mass, mumbling Latin etc. This was in the 60s. Its no wonder a liturgical revolution happened with that sort of behaviour...
